Monastic Guest House
The Monastic Guest House is within the Monastery enclosure and is set aside for males who have requested or been invited to join more closely with the monastic community, sharing their life of prayer, work and silence. Whilst the atmosphere here is friendly and relaxed, guests are expected to use their stay in the Monastic Guest House as a time of spiritual retreat by attending Offices in the Abbey Church, doing some light duties helping the monks in their work (if willing) and respecting the overall silence. Our aim is to provide an atmosphere and opportunity in which people can deepen their personal relationship with God, be refreshed and renewed. Unnecessary talking is not encouraged.
Although you can bring your mobile phone to use as an alarm clock, you should not use it for calls except if you require immediate assistance or in an extreme emergency. Radios, other audio devices and laptops/computers are not allowed in the Monastic Guest House. You are coming here for a few days to seperate yourself from the outside world by making a spiritual retreat and living alongside the monastic community.
Accommodation is full board, with self-service breakfast being taken in the guest house dining room where you are also welcome to make a cup of tea or coffee whenever you wish. Dinner and supper are taken in silence in the Refectory with the monks. Our diet is simple and mainly vegetarian so if you have any special food requirements you will need to bring them with you.
We are grateful for a donation towards the cost of your stay in the Monastic Guest House, our guideline is £35 per person per day. Your generosity will enable us to accommodate those who are genuinely unable to make a donation.
The Monastic Guest House is open all year except during Holy Week and Easter, and throughout the Christmas period. We can accommodate up to four guests in single rooms, but from the beginning of May until the end of September we cannot accept bookings for less than three nights. The maximum length of stay is one week a year. Please see the Contact page for details of how to apply.
